Summer Work: Exploring Eastern Europe and Russia
Instructions: Chernobyl-Discovering about a disaster.
You are invited to explore one of the most terrifying disasters that occurred in Ukraine 25 years ago.
A. Search for the Chernobyl Disaster. A then answer the following questions.
1. What was Chernobyl?
2. Why did the accident at Chernobyl in 1986 happen?
3. What were the effects of the accident on the land and people of Ukraine?
4. How many people died in the accident?
5. What did the survivors of the immediate impact of the accident suffer from later on?
6. Were the effects felt only in Ukraine? Where were they felt also?
7. What are the effects today in the area?
8. How can a similar disaster be prevented in other places?
9. What kind of disaster took place in Japan this year? How did people react to it?
10. Imagine that a nuclear disaster, or an earthquake hit your country, how would you react?

N.B. Students will be tested on the content of the summer work, when back to school. After handing in the summer work to the teacher on the first week of school, the grade will be considered as a first test. 30 points will be deducted from the test as penalty for plagiarism in case the work is copied from the internet as copy paste.
• Students will be graded according to their class level.

Read a story of your own choice and level. Then, complete the following tasks and hand in a typed copy of your work. Please bring the story with you on the first day of school.

  1. What is the title of the novel?
  2. Who is the author?
  3. Mention the main and minor characters.
  4. What is the setting?
  5. What is the conflict?
  6. What are the steps taken to resolve the conflict?
  7. What is the climax of the novel?
  8. How was the problem resolved?
  9. Choose two characters you liked most and then mention their character traits. Support with evidence from the text: what the characters say, do, think and what other characters say about them.
  10. If you were the main character, what would you do differently to resolve the problem?
  11. Would this novel make a good movie? Why or why not?
  12. Choose 20 words you found difficult or interesting. Define them and then use them in meaningful sentences of your own.

NB. You will be tested on the novel on the first day of school. The grade will be considered as the first test grade of the year. Your answer sheets will be checked for plagiarism (copying from internet or other sources) and grades will be deducted accordingly.
