Summer Work: The Middle Ages in Europe
Instructions: Discovering the Middle Ages in Europe.
You are invited to travel back through time and imagine life in the past in Europe.
A. Search for how did the Magna Carta or the Big Charter lead to the first steps of democracy in England, and to a constitutional monarchy. And then answer the following questions.
1. Why were the nobles especially unhappy with John in 1215?
2. What do the words Magna Carta mean?
3. How did the king “sign” the Magna Carta?
4. What qualities did the writers of the Magna Carta want in royal officials?
5. Who forced King John to sign the Magna Carta?
6. What did the Magna Carta say about the powers of the king?
7. According to the Magna Carta, nobles or “free men” could be imprisoned under what circumstances?
8. Name two basic individual rights guaranteed in the Magna Carta.
9. How did the Magna Carta contribute to the growth of democracy in England?
10. If the Magna Carta had been the last words ever written on reform, would it have made any difference in the long run? Why or why not?
N.B. Students will be tested on the content of the summer work, when back to school. After handing in the summer work to the teacher on the first week of school, the grade will be considered as a first test. 30 points will be deducted from the test as penalty for plagiarism in case the work is copied from the internet as copy paste.
• Students will be graded according to their class level.

Read a story of your own choice and level. Then, complete the following tasks and hand in a typed copy of your work. Please bring the story with you on the first day of school.
- What is the title of the novel?
- Who is the author?
- Mention the main and minor characters.
- What is the setting?
- What is the conflict?
- What are the steps taken to resolve the conflict?
- What is the climax of the novel?
- How was the problem resolved?
- Choose two characters you liked most and then mention their character traits. Support with evidence from the text: what the characters say, do, think and what other characters say about them.
- If you were the main character, what would you do differently to resolve the problem?
- Would this novel make a good movie? Why or why not?
- Choose 20 words you found difficult or interesting. Define them and then use them in meaningful sentences of your own.
NB. You will be tested on the novel on the first day of school. The grade will be considered as the first test grade of the year. Your answer sheets will be checked for plagiarism (copying from internet or other sources) and grades will be deducted accordingly.
